To help amplify the voices of Queer Women, Femmes, Trans & Non Binary writers/illustrators in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genres, I have created Nova, a quarterly literary/animation prize dedicated to underrepresented writers & illustrators in North America.
We're focusing on poems/prose/fiction which can be connected with illustration. There is no minimum or maximum word count, & you are not mandated to have illustration be a component of your submission (you can submit a short story with no illustration, but this is an opportunity to submit work with a corresponding visual component). There is no submission fee. I am asking that you send work that has not been previously published in print or online, with the understanding that you will know the status of your application throughout the submission period (I encourage you to simultaneously submit your work because I know you would not send it to me unless you believed in it strongly & wished for it to be seen). Don’t limit yourself – I’m okay with it if you are, and I'm okay with a consistent level of communication. If during the process you discover that your work is to be published elsewhere, and you wish to submit another piece for that period of time, simply write to me immediately, and let me know (You can always submit another piece in the following submission period). Like Spark & Echo, I plan on being as easy to deal with as possible with this endeavor, so I encourage you to say hello.
In terms of this quarterly award, this will be open to all of North America, and be multilingual. If you wish to submit a piece in a language other than English, I encourage you to do so (A written translation is not necessary as we will have translators on hand, and we will be publishing this posting in several languages in the coming weeks). We've decided to keep the structure of what to submit open for now, but please do not send any original prints of your work in the mail if you do have a visual component to your work (if you do not have access to the technology to produce hi-resolution images, inquire within and I'll find someone in your city to assist you). If you do wish to submit work via mail, please let me know and I'll send you an address and assist in the postage costs (We're not asking for an entire book, or a complete story - you can send a moment in a story that you're working upon, if you wish). Again, you can submit anything from a piece of fiction, to a comic, to a series of poems connected to illustrations (if you are unclear as to whether or not you can submit a particular piece of work, just email me and I'll let you know). Let's keep it as open of a framework as possible for now, and we'll evolve with your input.
You are eligible to win the top prize once every twelve months (if you win one of the 2nd or 3rd place awards, you are welcome to continue to submit work). You are eligible for a maximum of two prizes every twelve months.
No auxiliary materials are required. If you win one of the three awards during the month, I’ll ask for you to send me an up-to-date bio. I ask that you submit your work by email to email@example.com (Microsoft Word or PDF attachments would be best, but not imperative & you may submit any visual materials in whatever format you desire). Tell me a little bit about yourself in your email and where I can read more of your work, and that will be more than sufficient.
This is open to individuals at any stage of their craft. If you are in the beginning stages of your career or have never been published, do not feel like you are ineligible – you must start somewhere, and like Spark & Echo, I feel this is a good place to start.
$5000.00 CAD for the top prize.
$1500.00 CAD for the second prize.
$750.00 CAD for the third prize.
All winning pieces will be published online at http://shootforthemoon.art unless you wish to publish the work on your own platform (in which case, we'd be happy to amplify your site where the winning work will be posted)
Submission deadline is the 1st every three months, with the prizes announced/awarded on the 15th of the deadline month (if you wish for an alternative date or method of payment, feel free to let me know). You will be notified of the award before the announcement is made, but I ask that you keep the news confidential until I make the announcement on the website.
(The awards will resume once we have hired our new co-editors for our publishing company)
Like Spark & Echo, if you do not win a prize, it does not mean I will simply forget about you. Amplifying voices means financial support. If you are working on a project or are submitting a piece from a larger work that requires process funding, I’m open to discussing financial assistance. Submitting your work means you’re on my radar, and I believe in financial encouragement to continue your work. I'm paying for these awards out of my own pocket & I'm very interested in investing in writers.
I encourage input as to how the awards can take shape as the months/years progress. This is your award. I'm open to your ideas and how this can be better. I promise I will listen.
If you have any questions, once again, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will respond as soon as I am able.
